14th November 2014 – ATP World Tour Finals, Day 6

We at least got one decent match when Nishikori played Ferrer. The Spaniard took the opening set having been a break behind but Nishikori fought back with the next 2 sets.

The evening match saved the organisers the cost of a couple of tubes of balls as Murray came close to being double bageled in his 6-0, 6-1 loss to Roger Federer.

Hopes aren’t high of today’s matches giving us competitive matches in a tournament that has given us less excitement than a Tennis Insight upgrade.

14:00 – Djokovic v Berdych

Head to heads are 16-2 to Djokovic. Their only 2014 meeting was in the Beijing final and Djokovic won 6-0, 6-2. Uh oh.

Only Djokovic and Federer have looked like they deserved to be at these Tour Finals. Djokovic won his first two matches 6-1, 6-1 and 6-3, 6-0. remember he is playing other top 10 players.

Berdych has never won his first Round Robin match at the Tour Finals and seemed determined to keep that streak going against Wawrinka. He looked a shadow of the player who has played consistently well this season. he improved in his second match against Cilic who was suffering with nerves and as we found out later a tear in his quad.

Does anyone really believe that Berdych has a chance to win this? Djokovic starts at 1.22 (now dropped to 1.11) . He beat Berdych in this tournament last year 6-2, 7-6 but I think Berdych will do well to get 8 games again today.

20:00 – Wawrinka v Cilic

Djokovic beat Berdych easily (2 and 2) and moved into the semi finals as well as securing the year end number one ranking. It will take a special performance from someone to prevent him from defending his title this week.

This evening Wawrinka has a chance to win a place in the semi finals and a match against Federer.

Standing in his way is Cilic who has lost both his matches. All is not well with the Croatian and he hasn’t been able to produce anything like his best tennis. He is the player who has struggled the most with the surface. He hasn’t settled into his serving routine and this has affected his whole game. His backhand has looked awkward at times and it will be difficult for him to make the necessary changes in time for this match.

Wawrinka played better than I expected him to in his first match against Berdych but his task was made very easy by Berdych’s poor performance. He was then outplayed by Djokovic in his second match but there are few players who can compete with Djokovic in the form he has produced so far this week.

Cilic needs a strong win tonight to have a chance of making the semis but I don’t see that happening. The match is Wawrinka’s to win or lose and I think he will step up to take his opportunity.

Cilic’s confidence is on the floor and that can only help Stan to progress.
