ATP US Open, 1st round: Verdasco v Pospisil, 5:20pm

Verdasco 1.35, Pospisil 3.75

Verdasco won their only previous match. That was in Doha in January this year. He won in straight sets on a hard court. The opening set was tight but Pospisil faded badly in the second and didn’t win a game.

Pospisal has better overall results this year. Their hard court results are more even. Posp has played some Challenger events this year whereas Verdasco plays all his tennis on the ATP main tour.

Fernando Verdasco

Verdasco’s recent results are not the best. He lost to Zeballos in 3 sets last week. He won the opening set and i suppose he may have wanted to rest before this week but I would have thought 2 or 3 matches would have been better preparation.

Pospisil has lost his last 3 matches. All were on hard courts and he started each as market favourite. He reached the second round at the US Open last year but that was the first time he had won a match since 2011.

I favour Verdasco to win this but he starts priced too low. He used to do well at this tournament. More recently he has only made it through the 1st round twice in 4 years.

Back Verd if he loses set 1. This should be a very long match

Update: Verdasco won the 1st set 6-2 and Pospisil retired!
