Friday the 13th! Good luck

Suarez Navarro v Halep (clay):

Suarez Navarro leads the head to heads 2-1 and won their only previous clay court match. All 3 of their matches went to 3 sets.

Carla plays on home soil this week but I don’t think she has shown the best form. She gave a lot of chances to Cetkovska in the last round and it was only due to her opponent’s inability to convert them that she came through. The crowd will certainly try to give her a lift and as all their previous meetings were close it could be enough.

Halep knocjed out Vinci in the last round losing  just 4 games. It was a terrible performance from the Italian but Halep also played some excellent tennis.

Not easy to pick a winner here so I feel Halep’s starting price is a little low at 1.64 . I won’t be getting involved at the start but I expect a lot of decent price swings in this one so ideally an early lead for Halep will bring a nice price to lay at. If pressed to pick a winner it would be Halep based on performances this week.

Update: Several breaks in the first set which went to Suarez Navarro. However in the second Halep lost the plot and it was an easy set for the Spaniard.

Suarez Navarro won 6-4, 6-1.

Govortsova v Cirstea (clay):

Cirstea made a bad start to a match for the second time this week as she slumped to a first set loss against Dominguez Lino. She didn’t hold serve once in that first set. However in the next 2 sets she was excellent although her serve was still shaky.

Govortsova also needed a third set to beat Pous-Tio when she had several chances to take the match in straight sets.  She was totally in charge in that third set though.

Today’s match is all about Cirstea’s serve. Her ground strokes have been excellent but only when her serve is firing. Poor serving knocks her confidence which affects her whole game.

Govortsova created many chances to get the job done quickly yesterday but wasted them. She played well in patches but if Cirstea serves well I don’t think Govortsova will have the answers.

Update: Yet another bad start from Cirstea. She held serve and then the match was delayed for rain. After they came back on she won just 1 more game in the set.

Normal service was resumed for the 2nd and 3rd sets although many of the games were very long.

Cirstea eventually won 2-6, 6-1, 6-3.
