WTA Tokyo, 2nd round: Krunic v Riske, 4:30am

Krunic  1.87, Riske 2.14

Riske won their only previous meeting. That was on an indoor hard court in Luxembourg in October 2014. She won in 3 sets.

Krunic has better overall results this year. She has won 61% of matches to Riske’s 51%.  On hard courts they won 61% and 52% respectively.

Recent form strongly favours Krunic. She reached the second round in Cincinnati as a qualifier and beat Ostapenko in the main draw before falling to Suarez Navarro. She reached the third round at the US Open and beat Johanna Konta in the first round but was beaten by in form Goerges in the third round.

Aleksandra Krunic

Riske came through a messy 1st round match with Brengle in which both had treatment for injury. She was broken 6 times. She has been very unlucky with some of her recent draws and has come up against top players in the early rounds of tournaments. They included Vandeweghe at the US Open and Wimbledon, Venus in Cincinnati, Pliskova in Eastbourne and Muguruza in Birmingham.  She reached the quarter finals of this tournament last season.

Wait for 2.10 on Krunic. The match could be close but Riske needs to make huge improvements in the standard of her serve if she is to have any chance.

Update: Krunic won 6-3, 6-4.
