WTA Linz, 13:00 – Pironkova v Knapp
They have played twice before. Their first meeting was back on 2006 and went to Pironkova. She also won at this season’s US Open. Knapp has yet to take a set from her.
Knapp starts as slight favourite today at 1.82 and the price is well deserved as she has been playing excellent tennis.
Both players had easier than expected second round matches. Pironkova was due to play Bouchard but the Canadian withdrew before their match. Knapp was up against Rybarikova who retired having lost the opening set.
Knapp has been playing well for a while and won the title in Tashkent. Pironkova’s vein of good form is more recent and so perhaps more fragile.
I am going with Knapp to get her first win over today’s opponent but will wait for a higher price before backing.I will lay Pironkova below 1.70 .
WTA Linz, 17:00 – Voegele v Friedsam
Qualifier Friedsam has already won 5 matches to reach this stage. Having come through the qualifying rounds she came back from losing the first set to beat Cibulkova. In the second round she won the first set against Cepelova 6-0 but had a bit of a wobble serving for the match and was broken. However she took the match with a break in the very next game.
Since she reached the semi final in Baku in July Voegele’s form has been poor. Four of her five losses since then have been as pre match favourite. This week she started with an excellent straight sets win over Zahlavova Strycova and followed it up with a 3 sets win over Schmiedlova.
Voegele won their only previous meeting which was at this season’s French Open. Friedsam’s game has improved in the last few months and her game is more suited to hard courts.
The winner of this one is tough to call although I expect Friedsam to get herself in a winning position. I think Voegele will put her under a lot of pressure if sets are tight.
I am looking to get on Friedsam if she goes behind early but I won’t be staying in the trade to the end as i think there’s a good chance she will choke.
WTA Linz, 19:00 – Pliskova v Brengle
Brengle won’t have been expecting to beat Ivanovic so she had a pleasant surprise when Ivanovic withdrew. She now meets Pliskova who has continued her excellent form with straight sets wins over Flipkens and Barthel.
Pliskova starts at 1.25. Brengle has come through three qualifying rounds. Her first round opponent, Begu, retired and she had the Ivanovic withdrawal so luck has been on her side but I really don’t see how shew wins this one.
I will wait for a better price on Pliskova although I am not overly confident of getting it. 1.40 or better will be fine.
