WTA Quebec, 16:00 – Brengle v Maria

Maria took a break from the tour to have a baby who was born in December. She was ranked 115th before her break but dropped over 300 places by the time she returned in April. She has struggled to find any sort of form btu will be encouraged by her win over Tatishvili in the first round this week.

Brengle has been doing well recently in the ITF hard court events. A semi final in Sacrimento, a title in Lexington and another semi final in Vancouver included some very respectable wins.

Brengle took a few games to get used to the big hitting of Samantha Crawford in the first round but once she did she looked fairly comfortable.

They have played 3 times and Maria won them all but they were all before her break. Brengle starts as slight favourite at 1.87 .

Both players struggled with their second serves in the first round. Maria has the bigger serve and hit 9 aces but also 6 double faults.

I think this one could be close and 3 sets wouldn’t surprise me. Whoever improves most on their second serves will be in a strong position and I am going with Maria to get the win.

WTA Quebec, 18:00 – Kania v Hlavackova

Hlavackova’s singles form has been dire this season. She hasn’t won a main draw match since January when she reached the semi finals in Pattaya. Since then she has won back to back matches in just 1 tournament which was an ITF event on grass in Nottingham. She reached the semi final that week too. Seems its all or nothing for her!

Kania made it through the qualifying rounds at Wimbledon, Stanford and the US Open but lost her first round match each time. She won the ITF event in Landisville (USA) before the US Open. That tournament was on hard courts.

They start around evens and I am favouring Kania to get the win. Hlavackova only seems interested in doubles and has won too few singles matches this season for my liking.

WTA Quebec, 00:15 – Karatantcheva v Mladenovic

Karatantcheva plays her best tennis in clay. She hasn’t won back to back main draw matches on indoor hard courts since 2008 and has never done it in a main WTA event.

Mladenovic made a slow start against Broady but was able to take the match in straight sets.

Mladenovic has a good record on indoor hard courts and reached the quarter finals last year where she lost to Bouchard. She starts at 1.35 . I’d like 1.50 at least so I will wait for a slow start from her and hopefully a Karatantcheva break before entering.
