Well we had last week to get into the routine of night shifts. No tournaments during the day this week though so no wimping out!
Yesterday’s blog picks were delayed by rain and will be played tonight.
WTA Hobart International, 23:30 – Riske v McHale
They haven’t played since 2009 when they met twice. Riske won both of them.
Neither player had a great season on the hard courts last season. Riske had a winning record….just and McHale won just 13 of her 28 main draw hard court matches.
Riske ended 2014 on a high with a title in her penultimate tournament in Tianjin. She lost her first match of 2015 in straight sets to Gavrilova.
McHale has lost in the first round of her last 4 tournaments including last week in Brisbane to Lucic Baroni.
Riske starts at 1.58 . As she hasn’t taken her first win of the year I would prefer 1.80 . I do favour her to win this one. McHale’s confidence can’t be too high.
WTA Hobart International, 04:00 – Watson v Rybarikova
Both players had losing records last season. Watson in particular struggled on the hard courts winning just 4 of her 17 main draw matches. Her preparation for the season ended in the Hopman Cup where she was outplayed by Radwanska and Cornet. She did manage a win against Dellacqua which will give her some confidence.
Rybarikova was battered by Svitolina last week winning just 2 games. She lost in the first round in Hobart last season.
Watson starts as slight favourite at 1.85 and if Rybarikova plays like she did last week the Brit has a chance tonight. I don’t expect this to be a quality match but we should get a few breaks of serve.
I will start by laying whoever gets the first break. I’d prefer that to be Rybarikova as slightly favour Watson.
Apia International, Sydney, 01:00 – Muguruza v Errani
Errani lost in the first round last week but was carrying an injury.
Muguruza ended 2014 well but hasn’t played a match this season.
Head to heads are 1-1 but it was Muguruza who won their only meeting in 2014. She won in 3 sets on a hard court in New haven.
The start of the match could be a bit of a mess. Errani has lost 4 of her last 5 matches and she was moderate favourite in each of them.
I have to favour Muguruza for the outright win but she is unlikely to be sharp in the first set of her first match. She starts at 1.51 but I expect her to trade higher in the first set.
I’ll wait for the higher entry unless Errani looks uncomfortable from the start.
