ATP Stuttgart, 11:40 – It made a refreshing change yesterday to watch Fognini just play tennis without all the other bullshit that has blighted so many of his performances in the last few months.
Yesterday he struggled to break down an impressive Giraldo who has also been in superb form but in the end he won in straight sets.
Bautista Agut really had problems with Garcia Lopez and their match was too close to call right up to the third set tie break. He had a lot of chances to break GGL but couldn’t take them.
Fognini leads the head to heads 5-1 and has won their last 3 meetings which also included both their clay court encounters. Bautista Agut has yet to take a set from the Italian.
Fognini starts at 1.49 which is almost bound to trade higher. Even when he’s playing well he can make a slow start and often faces early pressure on his serve.
I need a higher price and will back with part stake when Fognini faces a break point and will top up if he is broken.
ATP Bastad, 12:00 – Verdasco reached the final last season and looks good to make a return this time.
He has a tough match today though against Cuevas who took him to 5 sets at this season’s French Open.
At the French Open Verdasco’s serve was below par but this week he has looked solid from the line. Cuevas is likely to put the serve under more pressure than Carreno Busta did and we could see three sets if Verdasco loses concentration.
He starts at 1.42 and I will, as usual be waiting for a higher entry. I will wait for an early break for Cuevas.
ATP Newport, 21:00 – I thought Sock would have run out of steam this week after he won the Wimbledon Doubles title last week. yet he is still there after a straight sets win over top seed Isner last night.
He plays Aussie Hewitt who loves this tournament. He has reached the final for the past 2 seasons.
Hewitt faced a big server in Johnson in the last round and dealt with it well. Sock is a similar sort of player and I think we will see very tight sets.
From a betting point of view the value is on Sock at the start but his legs have to be feeling heavy and I am going with Hewitt to come through for another final appearance. I will wait to back him above evens though.
Today’s WTA matches all look like comfortable wins for the favourites. I will monitor the score and back the favourite if they go a break behind.
The Rosol v Youzhny and Groth v Karlovic matches are covered for the Shark Tips service.
More to come..
