12th March 2014

So Gasquet went out yesterday as did Kvitova. No huge surprise in either result. Gonzalez taking Djokovic to 3 sets was probably the surprise of the day.

Both of the 6pm matches are covered for the Shark Tips service. Blog style previews for the picks are given for selections that are intended to set and  leave to run.

20:00Gulbis had a good win over Dimitrov in 3 sets yesterday. Bautista Agut also had a three setter to beat Nieminen.

Gulbis starts at 1.37 but that is likely to go higher. Bautista Agut knocked out Berdych in the second round. That’s something not many players have been able to do this season. Berdych must have been ready for a rest but that was still a great win.

An early break for Bautista Agut will be a good entry point but with part stake. Breaking him hasn’t been easy and a single break could be enough for him to take the set.

I am still favouring Gulbis for the win.

20:00Halep has had some tough  matches to get this far. Three sets against both Bouchard and Safarova will have drained her both physically and mentally.

Dellacqua has had an extra day’s rest  after Davis pulled out of their match with food poisoning. She would have welcomed that as she has already played 5 matches including a win over Vinci in the third round.

Despite Dellacqua’s excellent form I think it would be a shock if Halep was to lose this.

I would wait for a better price than her 1.20 SP but she has been starting matches well. Al l three of her opening set have been won 6-2. Perhaps a lay of her when she wins the first set is a better plan. If Dellacqua breaks first in set 2 remove your liability and green up when she wins the set.

22:00Isner and Verdasco have only met once which was at the US Open in 2009. Verdasco won in 4 sets but the result is irrelevant.

Isner hasn’t faced a break point in his 2 matches so yo would expect that Verdasco isn’t going to get  many chances. He is likely to get frustrated.

Isner’s own return of serve has been at its normal level. He hasn’t won more than 35% of return points in either of his matches.

Isner in 2 tie breaks? I wouldn’t be surprised at all.
