WTA Connecticut Open, 18:00 – Zahlavova Strycova v Kvitova
Kvitova leads the head to heads 4-1. They have played just once this season which was at Wimbledon. Kvitova won in straight sets. She lost to Halep in last year’s final and won the title in 2012.
After her title win in 2012 she reached the 4th round at the US Open but ran out of energy against Bartoli. Last year she lost in the third round to wild card Riske winning just 3 games. Having won Wimbledon again this year will she want to protect her body and her energy levels to give her the best chance possible in New York?
Zahlavova Strycova has little chance at the US Open so will be giving everything in this one. She has a terrible record against top 10 opposition but this situation could be different to other tournaments.
Of course we don’t know what’s going through Kvitova mind. She starts at 1.28 and I think there is a good chance she is looking to rest.
I will lay her if she drops below 1.20 . I think if Zahlavova Strycova gets an early break and then holds the market will over react enough for us to remove the liability on Kvitova and still leave a decent profit on Barb.
ATP Winston Salem, 20:00 – Janowicz v Goffin
Who will be the player to burst Goffin’s bubble? He has won his last 4 tournaments and is on a 25 match winning run. Fatigue shouldn’t be a factor as he took 2 weeks off after his 4th title on the clay.
I’m not sure how Janowicz is still in the tournament really. His serve deserted him against Sousa but he scraped through in a third set tie break. In the last round he was helped out by Roger Vasselin’s lack of confidence plus the other distractions the Frenchman is suffering with. Janowicz won 6-4 in the third.
Goffin’s run of wins is understandably pushing his price down aided by Janowicz being so inconsistent. Even though a lot of Goffins wins were against Challenger opposition so many wins must make the game seem so easy to him. When confidence is high it is easier to make shots without fear of failure.
It is hard to go against Goffin but I will wait for a healthier price on him. 1.80+ would be fine.
ATP Winston Salem, midnight – Garcia Lopez v Querrey
Querrey was very impressive last night against Anderson. That was irritating as I had tipped Anderson! There were no breaks in the first set although Anderson had the only break points in the set. Querrey won it in a tie break. There was just the single break in set two when Anderson served at 4-5.
Garcia Lopez came through in a third set tie break against Olympian Donald Young (that still makes me chuckle. A country that size……)
Querrey leads the head to heads 3-0 although the most recent was last season at this tournament. He won in 3 sets.
Querrey said after the win over Anderson that it was the best tennis he has played all summer. he starts as a 1.40 favourite. If he continues to serve well then the price is tight but not a million miles from where it should be. However when your whole games is based around the serve if that shot starts to fail you can get into all sorts of trouble.
Their last two matches went to a third set. Garcia Lopez has the game to make Querrey play more shots than the American is comfortable with and can easily nick a set and take it to a third once again.
Querrey to take his place in the semis.
