15th June 2014

Three finals today as well as a few first round matches in Holland.

WTA Birmingham, 13:00 – Ivanovic v Zahlavova Strycova

Zahlavova Strycova certainly wasn’t expected to be in the final. She has shown her fighting qualities this week. Her first 3 matches went to 3 sets and she has treatment for a leg injury on more than one occasion.

She hasn’t won a set in her two previous matches with Ivanovic.

Ivanovic hasn’t dropped a set all week and has looked in excellent form. She goes into this final as a very strong favourite. If you don’t count the Hopman Cup exhibition at the start of last season she hasn’t lost a final as favourite in the last 8 years.

Zahlavova Strycova has been in just 3 main tour finals. She lost 2 of them though was under dog in all 3. Her last one was in 2012 so this is a big deal for her. She has nothing to lose and may take an early lead but Ivanovic will control the majority of this one.

ATP Queens Club, 14:00 – Dimitrov v Lopez

I was thinking Lopez hadn’t been broken this week but he was in fact broken twice in his first round match. Since then however he has faced just 2 break points and saved them both.

Dimitrov beat a poor Wawrinka in the semi final. He hasn’t lost a set so far but won’t find it easy to break the Lopez serve.

There are no prizes for predicting this will be a serve dominated match and it will come down to who can convert the rare break chances. No tie break would be a surprise.

Dimitrov is too low at 1.58 and with Lopez in this form on grass this is pretty much 50/50.

It wouldn’t be a shock result if Lopez took it in 2 tie breaks.

ATP Halle, 14:00 – Federer v Falla

Federer leads the head to heads 6-0. Four of those matches were on grass and Falla came close to an upset at Wimbledon in 2010 when he took a 2 set lead.

Falla has found his serve this week. His best chance of taking a set is in a tie break. He has played 4 this week and won them all.

Federer has only had to play 2 matches as Lu withdrew before their quarter final. He has played a tie break in each match losing the first to Sousa but beating Nishikori in the semi final.

Falla need to take the first set. if he can do that it isn’t inconceivable that he can take 2 tie breaks.

Fed’s worth a lay at 1.09 .
