As expected Djokovic and Berdych both won on Friday. Hajek and Rosol were scheduled to play the doubles for the Czechs but that wasn’t fooling anyone. Berdych and Stepanek have a superb record in Davis Cup doubles and were brought in on Saturday. Serbia stuck with the Bozoljac / Zimonjic partnership which they may now regret as the Czechs won in straight sets.
So the tie is likely to go down to the 5th rubber. Djokovic has a 14-2 head to head record over Berdych. Even though it is the end of the season and players are tired he knows he has to get the win to take the tie to 2-2.
I doubt it will be a straight sets win though. They have played 3 times in a best of 5 format on a hard court. In 2 of them including their only best of 5 match this season ( Australian Open) Berdych took a set.
Djokovic to win in 4 sets.
If Berdych can somehow get a rare win over Djokovic then the tie is over and the Czech Republic hold onto their crown. However it is more likely to be settled by the match between Lajovic and Stepanek.
They have never played but Stepanek starts as a 1.23 favourite. The Serbian crowd have been very loud and are certain to get involved. They will try everything they can to put Stepanek off his stride. The slow pace of the court may work against Stepanek a little but he is a very experienced Davis Cup player.
Lajovic may nick a set but I expect to see the Czech Republic as Davis Cup Champions once again.
