WTA Collector Swedish Open, 13:00 – Peterson v Barthel
Peterson leads 1-0. That was in 2014 on a hard court. Barthel retired in the second set.
Local Wild Card Peterson plays almost exclusively on clay. She had a good win over Siniakova in 2 sets in the last round.
Barthel had been in awful form coming into this tournament. That continued in her 1st round match with Bertens. Both players were terrible especially in the first set. Barthel won in 3 sets. She was much better in the 2nd round and won 6-0, 6-0 though Zanevska was unbelievably bad. It’s amazing that she came through 2 qualifying rounds and a 1st round match.
This match should be a bit closer. Barthel got less than 50% of her 1st serves in against Zanevska. She will need to improve that. Don’t be surprised to see this go to 3.
Lay Barthel if she gets an early break.
ATP Hall of Fame Tennis Championships, 18:00 – Brown v Karlovic
Brown leads their previous meetings 2-1. The most recent was 2015 on a hard court. Karlovic won in 3 sets. They have never played on grass.
Brown beat Querrey in 3 sets in the last round. He only faced 2 break points and was broken once.
Karlovic didn’t face a break point in the first round but lost a set in a tie break to Marchenko. In the last round he faced 3 break points and saved them all. He hit 29 aces in that last match against Jaziri.
Brown is playing well enough to take this to 3 sets. His best hope of winning is in tie breaks.
Back Karlovic if Brown takes set 1.
ATP Hall of Fame Tennis Championships, 19:30 – Hernych v Sock
Hernych won their only previous meeting. That was at this tournament in 2013. He won in 3 sets. Sock is much improved since their last meeting.
Hernych’s form coming into this tournament wasn’t good. I was surprised that he beat Falla in the last round in 3 tie breaks though Falla was well below his best.
I was also a little surprised when Lacko took the opening set from Sock. The 2nd set went to a tie break too so Sock was close to going out. He didn’t serve that badly and was broken just once in 3 sets.
No value on Sock at this price. He becomes value when a break behind or if Hernych takes set 1.
