WTA Eastbourne, 11:00 – I fell for Hantuchova’s trap yesterday. Last week she lost to Date Krumm and lost the second set 6-0. This week she won in straight sets against Vinci who had reached the quarter finals last season. There were lots of breaks so trading it was very profitable but my Vinci tip for Shark Tips crashed.
Today she plays qualifier Davis who knocked out Errani yesterday. The young American has significantly less experience on this surface.
These two have never played. Errani was controlling the first set yesterday once she came back from being an early break behind. I had greened up before the set ended so am not sure what happened after that but Davis came back to win 7-6, 6-2.
Let’s put the Krumm bagel down to just a blip for Hantuchova. She has the better pedigree on this surface although Davis is well suited to the grass.
Davis is a fighter and so it should be a decent battle but I am going with Hantuchova. If I can back her when a break behind I will. There will be plenty of breaks. Davis’ second serve yesterday was terrible.
ATP Eastbourne, 13:00 – Garcia Lopez and Istomin have played 3 times with Garcia Lopez winning every time. The only match on grass was at this tournament 4 years ago.
Garcia Lopez’ performances on the grass used to be strong but since 2010 he hasn’t enjoyed too much success. The exception to that was his semi final in s-Hertogenbosch last season.
Istomin’s best year on the grass was 2010 when he reached the third round at the London Olympics and also the 4th round at Wimbledon.
Istomin has played 3 matches on grass this year and won 2 of them. He really should have won the other one against Dolgopolov as he had set points in the first set and was up a break in the third. He lost in 2 tie breaks.
Garcia Lopez hasn’t played a match on grass since losing in the first round at Wimbledon last year.
I am going with Istomin today but would prefer to back him above evens.
WTA Eastbourne, 17:00 – Vesnina won the title in Eastbourne last season. She had a straight forward win over Peng in the first round. Her opponent in round 2 is Madison Keys who knocked out Jankovic in straight sets yesterday.
We should see several price swings in this one. I think Vesnina will win in the end but her serve can be shaky at times. I will wait to lay Keys below 1.70 as my first entry.
I will add more matches if I get chance.
