19 Sep 2013 – Robson and Konta to make Semis?

Konta had a great win over Peng yesterday. She must fancy her chances of reaching a semi final as she is up against Zhang.

They played at last year’s US Open and Konta won in 3 sets. I’m not sure i can back her as a favourite though in this one. Zhang has a good record in her home country.

I will follow the opening few games before getting involved. Konta has a decent serve when it gets going but Zhang is better on return. I think we will see another 3 setter with the Brit coming through.

Update: Zhang won 7-5, 6-3.

Stakhovsky should be too strong indoors for Sousa. He won the title in 2009 and doesn’t have a lot of them so will have good memories of the place. Stak has been unlucky since then to draw strong opposition each time.

Update: Stak took the opening set and went a break behind in the 2nd set. He came back but then got broken again and lost the set. He didn’t win a game in the third!

Sousa won 3-6, 6-4, 6-0.

I think Robson could have a real fight on her hands against Zheng. They played in this tournament last year and Robson won in straight sets but her serve was working better that day than it has been this week. Also Zheng has been serving well and is posting better stats than we saw from her in their last meeting.

I want to see how the Robson serve is working before getting involved. If we aren’t seeing a lot of double faults then her ground strokes out rank her opponents but she can’t afford to give away many cheap points.

The stats favour Robson but I want nearer evens if I am to back her.

Update: She almost got away with it! However Zheng won 1-6, 7-6, 6-2.
