So many short prices today. it would be nice if we knew which favourites were about to screw up.

15:00Ferrer retired from his last match which was almost a month ago. That was due to a groin strain. He lost in the final in Miami last year so won’t be giving this one away.

Gabashvili served reasonably well against Granollers but was helped by a poor performance from the Spaniard.

This Spaniard won’t be anything like as toothless but I think he has to be a lay at the starting price of 1.15 .

Unless Ferrer is still struggling physically ( which I don’t expect him to be) he will get through this one.

17:00Mayer won both his previous meetings with Dodig. Their only meeting on a hard court was in Miami in 2012.

Mayer is another player who retired from his last match. That was in Indian Wells against Nieminen. That was due to a thigh strain. That could be the reason he starts as slight underdog.

Dodig ended last season really well and was playing aggressive tennis. He hasn’t really got going this season although has reached a couple of quarter finals. He lost in the first rounds of Indian Wells and Dubai (both as favourite) and needed 3 sets to beat Golubev in the first round.

I can see this one being close but as long as Mayer is over his injury he should have a little too much variety for Dodig.

17:00Bouchard and Svitolina should have an entertaining match but I can only see one winner.

Svitolina will fight hard and in fact has won both their previous matches, both in 2013 but Bouchard has improved greatly since then. She is now ranked 19th compared to around 100th when they last played. It should also be noted that Svitolina has improved her own ranking since then too.

Bouchard’s starting price of 1.45 isn’t tempting me at all though. An early break for Svitolina would be perfect.

In other matches Thiem will fancy his chances against Robredo.  I can see a three setter there but will be surprised if the Spaniard doesn’t have too much experience for the young Thiem.

McHale and Kanepi have played just once before. That was last month with McHale winning 6-4 in the third. Kanepi started that match as a 1.50 favourite and is today at 2.10 . Given how close that match was you have to feel that value is with Kanepi.
