ATP Barcelona v Open, 14:00 – Kuznetsov v Kohlschreiber
Kohlschreiber leads 1-0. That match was in 2013 on a clay court and went to 3 sets.
Kuznetsov took Monfils to 3 sets last week but hasn’t been in the best form this year.
Kohlschreiber had match points against Bautista Agut last week but lost the 3rd set tie break. He hasn’t managed back to back wins this season.
Kohlschreiber is priced too low. He has played decent tennis at times but has been inconsistent. He is over all a very good clay court player. I think he will trade higher at some stage but will get himself into a winning position. That will test his confidence.
Expect a close match and 3 sets look very possible.
ATP Barcelona Open, 15:00 – Gulbis v Paire
Gulbis leads the head to heads 1-0. That was in 2012 on clay. he won in 3 sets.
Gulbis is in awful form but had a superb clay season last year. He has to get his act together quickly to avoid a rapid drop down the rankings.
Paire has been in much better form since he recovered from his injury. I have to favour him today but as Gulbis will find his form eventually I will wait for an early higher price on Paire. Gulbis has managed a decent start a couple of times this year before fading fast.
Paire starts around 1.57
WTA Porsche Tennis grand Prix, 19:00 – Muguruza v Halep
Muguruza leads 2-0. Their most recent match was in this season’s Fed Cup on an indoor hard court. She won in 2 sets. Their other match was in 2014 on a hard court and that went to a decider.
The12 month clay stats favour Halep. She lost at this stage last year to Kuznetsova. This has been an excellent season so far for Halep. She already has 3 titles. Her only losses outside the Fed Cup were to Serena and Makarova.
This looks like a 3 setter but I am going with Halep to get her first win over Muguruza. Back Halep when she is a break behind.
