WTA Wuhan, 06:00 – Flipkens v Gajdosova

Gajdosova has had an amazing season. She has won ITF titles and recently reached the quarter finals of the WTA Hong Kong Tournament. In Tokyo last week as a qualifier she reached the second round losing to Wozniacki in 3 sets. This week she has again had to get through the qualifying rounds and in her first round in the main draw she beat Pennetta in straight sets.

Flipkens reached the quarter finals in New Haven btu then was dumped out in the first rounds of  the US Open and Tokyo. This week she came back from losing the first set to Schiavone.

Gajdosova won 92% of points on her first serve and 64% of points on her second serves. She hit 10 aces and just 1 double fault. Pennetta didn’t have a single break point.  That is quite some performance.

Flipkens gave Schiavone 11 break points. She won a decent 68% of points on her first serve and her first serve percentage was a respectable at 64%.

Flipkens should deal with the Gajdosova serve better than Pennetta did. Gajdosova starts at 1.75 which is understandable given her performance from the service line.

I am favouring Gajdosova but want to back her if Flipkens’ price drops to 1.60 . Three sets seem a real possibility.

WTA Wuhan, 08:00 – Vandeweghe v Jankovic

Head to heads are 2-2 but Vandeweghe has won their last 2 meetings including in Montreal last month. her more recent form has been erratic though and if she plays like she did against Cibulkova last week where both players were struggling to hold serve then Jankovic will be able to get a little revenge today.

Jankovic is no stranger to erratic form but we have seen more consistency from her this season than we have for a while. She reached the 4th round at the US Open. She lost her first match last week against Muguruza though there isn’t much shame in that at the moment.

In the first round this week she beat McHale in straight sets. She starts at 1.61 and I expect her to win this one but not without a few price swings along the way. if Vandeweghe’s serve isn’t working the rest of her game follows it and when Jankovic puts the pressure on I expect her to lose confidence in it.

I will wait for a higher entry on Jankovic in the early part of the match.

Update: Jankovic retired at 1-4. Can’t say I was sorry as I was red on that one. Bets void.

WTA Wuhan, 11:00 – Barthel v Bouchard

Barthel played a solid match yesterday to beat Peng in straight sets. She doesn’t have a good record against top 10 players with 3 wins in her last 13.

Bouchard is at her career high ranking of 7th.  She has suffered with injury after her Wimbledon final and her form is hard to gauge for this one as she hasn’t played since the US Open where she lost in the 4th round to Makarova.

Bouchard starts at 1.46 and you’d be brave to back from the start. I want to see how they play. We should see a higher price on her and waiting allows us to see whether we want to take her at higher odds.  I can see her taking a few games to find her timing and I won’t be at all surprised to see Barthel take the first set.
