Just a week before the US Open kicks off. Most of the big names are resting (or tanking) this week. Its a great chance for some of the middle ranking players to get a title or at least pick up some ranking points.
WTA Connecticut Open, 17:00 – Mladenovic v Errani
Head to heads are 1-1. The most recent was earlier this month. Errani won on a hard court in 3 sets. Mladenovic injured herself towards the end of the opening set.
Errani reached the semi finals in Toronto losing to Halep in 2 close sets. The following week she lost to Gavrilova though may have been tired.
Mladenovic has had some tough draws on hard courts this season. Last week she lost in 3 sets to Halep.
Neither player has points to defend this week. I give a slight edge to Errani but I expect a close match. It should be interesting to see if Mladenovic can get a little revenge for her recent loss to the Italian as her injury clearly played a part in that result.
Back Errani when she goes an early break behind.
WTA Connecticut Open, 20:00 – Rybarikova v Pennetta
Pennetta leads their previous matches 2-1. The most recent was earlier this year on clay. Pennetta won in 2 sets. Rybarikova’s win was in 2009 on a hard court.
The 12 month hard court stats don’t really favour either player but Pennetta leads when comparing performances against the same opponents.
Rybarikova has come through the qualifying rounds. She beat Kanepi and Mchale. She lost in the final last year.
This could be very close and 3 sets are likely. Rybarikova has more to play for as she is defending those final ranking points. Pennetta lost in the second round last year.
Lay Pennetta if she takes a break lead in the early games.
