WTA Wuhan Open,, 06:00 – Garcia v Kvitova
Kvitova starts at 1.29 but the way Garcia has played this week that has to be too low. Venus Williams and Radwanska were both beaten in third set tie breaks. She was able to take a bit of a breather in the 3rd round against Vandeweghe who crazily started as favourite.
Kvitoba has beaten two players in Pliskova and Knapp who had been in excellent recent form. Pliskova could have been forgiven for feeling a little fatigued after playing a lot of tennis but still pushed the 3rd ranked Kvitova to a tight third set finish.
We know Garcia will fight and we will almost certainly see a higher price on Kvitova. I am not convinced that Garcia can win this one but will be laying Kvitova at the start and will lay again if she breaks in the early games.
Kvitova to win in 2 tight sets or maybe three. She has been hitting very consistently so far this week and her serve is stronger than any of the players Garcia has met so far.
WTA Wuhan, 08:00 – Cornet v Bouchard
Cornet has played well this week which is surprising as she has been showing signs of injury in every match. In reality this looks to be a Murrayesque tactic as she has only looked in pain when losing.
She was able to stay with an injured Serena for almost the whole first set before the American quit at 5-6. In the 3rd round Flipkens had real chances to beat her. Flipkens came back from 2-5 in the opening set to have set points but lost it in the tie break. Cornet eventually won in 3 sets.
Bouchard made a slow start against Barthel who was serving well but once the Canadian got her own serve working she was always in with a chance. In the last round against Riske Bouchard looked more like her “old” self and took it in straight sets.
They have met twice before but never on a hard court. Bouchard won at Wimbledon this year and Cornet beat her on clay in 2013.
There is no reason to expect anything other than a close match but Bouchard will be enjoying being able to play well again after a rough few weeks and I am favouring her. Part stake on her at the start although if Cornet serves first I will wait for her to hold before backing. I think we could see Bouchard above evens at some stage.
WTA Wuhan, 11:00 – Kerber v Svitolina
if Muguruza hadn’t withdrawn due to illness she would probably have beaten Svitolina. Not that Svitolina hasn’t played well this week. Her serve has been excellent.
I thought Kerber would have a harder time against Zahlavova Strycova but she won ridiculously easily 6-1, 6-1. She lost her first set of the week against Diyas but after that she has looked good.
They have played twice in the last 2 seasons and Kerber has won each time in straight sets.
Kerber starts at 1.39 which is a little low but not an unfair price. Even so I am hoping for a good start from Svitolina to give us a healthier price. Kerber is capable of a poor service game in the early part of the match.
Kerber will be too strong.
