26th May 2014

The weather may be an issue in Paris today. Apparently it is overcast and there has been light rain this morning.

ATP French Open, 10:00Haase leads the head to heads 2-1 over Davydenko but they haven’t met in the last 2 seasons.

Haase hasn’t found his clay form from around this time last season. He has reached the second for the last 3 seasons but that is as far as he has gone.

Davydenko’s career is declining and he will struggle to match his third round effort in Paris last season. He has only gone beyond the first round once in his last 4 outings and that was last week when he beat Dudi Sela who isn’t the strongest of opponents.

I expect Haase to take this but I doubt it will be in straight sets. Haase’s SP of 1.58 isn’t tempting me but if he makes a slow start I will look to back him when a break down.

WTA French Open, 12:30Vesnina reached the semi finals in Portugal but 2 of her 3 tournaments since then have seen her exit in the first round.

McHale on the other hand has been the more consistent player with a third round in Rome which she backed up with a semi final last week in Strasbourg.

Stats for the last 3 months mostly favour Vesnina with McHale coming out on top only in service holds. However based on the more recent performances I have to go with the American today and she starts as slight  market favourite at 1.88 .

McHale has been saving a high percentage of her break points but she will need to be careful today as Vesnina converts more than 50% of the break points chances she gets.

ATP French Open, 14:30Thiem has been in great form this season and especially on the clay.  However he was ill recently and had to withdraw from his third round match in Madrid. 2 weeks later he struggled to beat Johnson in 3 tight sets and then lost to Simon.

This is Thiem’s first time at the French Open but in January it was his first time at the Australian Open and he reached the second round as a qualifier.

Mathieu went out to Nieminen last year in 5 sets. he reached the quarter finals in Bucharest but was then forced to withdraw from the Bordeaux CVhallenger event with a foot injury. He lost to Delbonis last week in Nice.

I think if Thiem is completely over his illness then he should take this one but I expect Mathieu to make him work for it.

As we don’t know about his fitness I feel Thiem’s SP of 1.59 is too low and I will wait a few games and hopefully get a price above 1.80 .

ATP French Open, 16:30 – I will be surprised if Anderson loses to Robert but I don’t think it will be an easy win. The home crowd will get behind Robert ( if anyone turns up to watch today!) and he has a good chance of taking it to 4 sets. Anderson at 1.38 is too low.

WTA French Open, 17:30 –  Cirstea has not won a first round match in her last 6 attempts since she reached the quarter finals in Dubai. She has a good chance today of breaking that pattern as her opponent Wozniack had a problem with her calf in her last qualifying match. The Canadian described a sharp pain in her leg during her match with Buyukakcay on Saturday.

Wozniack reached the 4th round in Indian Wells in March but has little else to show for her season.

Three of Cirstea’s last 6 losses went to three sets but she has been starting matches slowly and she won just 1 opening set in those 6 defeats.

I will wait for a higher price on Cirstea. She has to win one sometime! Wozniack’s injury might just help her get that win today.
