WTA Championships Final, 11:00 – Serena Williams v Simona Halep

This is a tough one to predict. Obviously Halep had the easy win earlier this week and handed Serena her biggest defeat for years. It has to be said that Serena had a nightmare that day but Halep was able to take maximum advantage which most players wouldn’t have been able to do and especially not on such a big stage.

Serena had to rely on other player’s results to make the semi finals and then came up against Wozniacki who has been the best player this week. Woz won the first set easily and served for the match in the third set. Even in the tie break she was 4-1 up yet Serena found a way to win the match.

Serena is all about the big matches and she will not have a problem finding the energy for this one. She will also want some quick revenge over Halep.

Halep showed in the French Open final that her game won’t be affected by playing the really big matches and she made Radwanksa look very ordinary in the semi final. Halep backers should be worried about her performance against Ivanovic. She had a 5-2 lead in set 1 and lost it. She then had a 4-2 lead in set 2 and allowed Ivanovic back in. Ivanovic seemed to be struggling physically towards the end of set 2 but perhaps that was as much to do about the disappointment of being knocked out of the tournament. It could also be argued that Halep was conserving energy for the semi final but if that was her plan why fight back from losing the opening set?

You get the feeling that Serena winning is just meant to be. Against almost any player I would expect Serena to win in 2 quick sets but Halep is a very special player and should push her very close.
