With 5 tournaments on this week the Trading Advice email is taking some doing! Rain delays help though and have given me a little extra time this morning.
WTA Brazil tennis Cup, 14:30 – Maria v Torro Flor
Torro Flor won their only previous match in 2012. It was on clay and she won 6-0, 6-0.
Clay isn’t Maria’s best surface. She has lost 4 of her last 5 on this surface.
Torro Flor has had a pretty dismal season so far. She did win an ITF event in May against decent opposition. Her second serve was weak against Peterson and if Peterson hadn’t choked all her chances away that match would have gone the distance.
I think this match will give us a lot of breaks of serve. Torro Flor is the better clay courter when in form. I will back her when she goes a break behind.
ATP Atlanta Open, 18:30 – Muller v Donaldson
It was an easy win for Muller over Young in the last round. He lost just 3 games. He has a very good record on hard courts this year.
Donaldson has come through the qualifying rounds and beat Devvarman in the main draw. I had expected Devvarman to put up more of a fight. Donaldson also beat big serving Aussie John-Patrick Smith in the qualifying rounds in 3 sets. Like most young Americans he has a big serve but the return side of his game gets neglected.
This could come down to tie breaks. Muller has won 11 of 14 tie breaks on hard courts this season.
There is little value on Muller unless Donaldson takes the first set.
ATP Atlanta Open, 21:30 – Soeda v Mannarino
Mannarino won their only previous meeting in 2012. That was on grass and he won in 3 sets.
Soeda has only played this event once before. That was in 2012 and he reached the semi finals. It was a good win for him in the last round beating Dolgopolov. That wasn’t one of Dolgopolov’s best performances but Soeda deserved the victory.
Mannarino reached the final last week in Bogota. He has been playing well in recent months but as he has nothing to defend this week I expect him to want to rest.
It is worth laying him below 1.20 .
