29th Mar 2014 – Miami, Women’s Final

17:00S Williams v Li

Serena leads the head to heads 10-1. In the last three seasons she won all five of their matches. Only the most recent one went to 3 sets. That was in the final in Istanbul last October. In their last 2 matches there was a 6-0 set to Serena.

Serena is all about proving she is the best in the world. Being world number 1 isn’t enough. She has to show that she is head and shoulders above the rest. Being half man, half bear helps.

In the semi final Sharapova started the match playing superb tennis and led 4-1 yet she was beaten in just 19 games. Now that Li is ranked just 1 place below her she will want to make a statement with today’s result and score. What better place to do it than in Miami. One of her favourite tournaments. Close enough to home that all her friends can attend.

Li has an excellent record this season. She has lost just 2 matches and won the Australian Open and Shenzhen titles. She had to fight hard in her quarter final and semi final. Cibulkova pushed her to 3 sets and she scraped past Wozniacki 7-5, 7-5.

Serena has had a couple of tight matches in the early rounds but once the higher ranked players were on the other side of the net she has got the job done in impressive fashion. I don’t think any other player on the tour could have stopped Sharapova in that semi final.

I don’t doubt for a second that Serena will be going for a quick demolition job today and I wouldn’t back against her achieving just that.
