Charleston, 18:00 – Bouchard and Jankovic played twice last season. Bouchard won the most recent on a Tokyo hard court in September but Jankovic won easily at today’s venue.
Bouchard beat Venus in 3 sets. She kept faith in her own game when Williams was throwing everything at her.
Jankovic has looked very assured in her two matches. Tomljanovic pushed her close in their opening set but had nothing left for the second.
Jankovic’s stats are strongest over the last 3 months and I think she will be able to use her experience and court presence to get the win.
Her starting price of 1.44 is way too low though as we should have very close sets and a deciding set wouldn’t surprise me at all. Backing Jankovic when a break behind or a set behind would be ideal.
Update: Bouchard took the first set and Jankovic took the second. Bouchard won 6-3, 4-6, 6-3.
Monterrey, 22:00 – Puig is quite a strong market favourite against Date Krumm.
These two haven’t met before and so often we see players having problems with Date Krumm when they are expected to dominate. She looks quite awkward in many of her ground strokes and can be hard to read at first.
Puig may take most of the first set to read her opponent so I expect to see a higher price on her.
Puig in 3 sets.
Update: The first 2 sets went as expected but it was Krumm who took the third.
Date Krumm won 6-4, 6-7, 6-4.
Charleston, 22:00 – Errani hasn’t been at her best so far. Bertens gave her problems in the early games before she retired after losing the set. Peng took her to two tie breaks and had chances to take each set.
Bencic has had a great week so far with wins over Kirilenko, Erakovic and Svitolina.
I think Bencic has a game style that can give Errani a real headache especially if the Italian once again falls short of her best.
Errani should have the experience to find a way to win but I don’t see it being in straight sets. She starts at 1.49 . Bencic’s best chance is to take the opening set.e
Update: Great performance from Bencic. She went for everything and Errani was poor having taken the first set.
Bencic won 4-6, 6-2, 6-1.
Monterrey, 02:00 – The match between Boserup and Jaksic isn’t an easy one to work out.
Jaksic was one of my Shark Tips selections against Kumkhum. She was outplayed in the opening set and went a break down in the second. She kept fighting and took the second set in a tie break. In the third Kumkhum had a couple of MTO’s but still went a break up. By the time Jaksic had dragged it back to another tie break Kumkhum was finished.
Boserup has come through the qualifying rounds so is on her 6th match tonight. In her two main draw matches she hit 23 double faults. Almost a full set’s worth! She also had an MTO in her last match.
Jaksic is clearly a fighter and had a good win over Knapp in the first round. I think her best chance is to stay in contention for as long as possible and hope to out last her opponent.
Boserup looks the stronger player but her body is starting to let her down. I think we will see a lot of breaks in this match.
Boserup in straight sets or Jaksic in 3.
Update: Neither were correct! Jaksic won 6-3, 6-0.
