4th August 2014

Everyone’s on Canada this week.

WTA Rogers Cup, 17:00Vinci v Zahlavova Strycova

Vinci leads the head to heads 4-1 but they have only played once since 2012. That was in Miami this year and Zahlavova Strycova won in 3 sets.

Vinci leads the 3 month stats in all categories except service holds.

Their matches are always close and just 1 has not gone to a third set.

Zahlavova Strycova has had a pretty good season. She was especially successful on the grass with a final in Birmingham and a quarter final at Wimbledon. She has performed reasonably well on hard courts with the quarter final in Miami being the highlight.

Vinci started the year badly. She reached the final in Istanbul last month but before that has won just 1 match on hard courts this season.

Vinci starts around 1.72 but that is likely to trade a fair bit higher.

The outright winner is a difficult one to call but as I expect it to be close I will be laying whoever breaks first. Laying the first set winner ( given their history ) would also seem to be a good option.

WTA Rogers Cup, 19:00Davis v Cornet

Cornet starts at 1.72. They have played once before which was in Miami last season. Cornet won in 3 sets.

Davis has had limited success on hard courts this season. A 4th round in Indian Wells is her best effort.

Cornet has done a little better although her loss to Rogers in Washington as a 1.35 favourite wasn’t impressive.

Davis has come through two qualifying rounds. her last match was a 3 setter against out of form Urszula Radwanska.

I am leaning towards Cornet for the win here but won’t be backing her below evens.

WTA Rogers Cup, 20:00 – Tomljanovic v Rogers

Rogers seemed to come out of nowhere to reach the final in Gastein beating Suarez Navarro, Errani and Giorgi. Last week she beat Cornet but fell to Erakovic in straight sets.

Tomljanovic started the year well but since her 4th round finish at the French Open she hasn’t won a main draw match.

Unless Tomljanovic can find her form she showed in the first half of the season she will struggle today. She has won both their previous meetings. Those matched were close with one going to 3 sets but the most recent was in 2013. Rogers has improved her game significantly since then.

Rogers starts at 1.73 . I will have part stake on her from the start and will add the rest above evens.
