WTA Madrid Open, 14:00 – Vinci v Cornet
Vinci leads the head to heads 3-0. Their only clay meeting was in 2007.
Cornet only won 2 clay matches last year yet she beat Halep in the last round in 2 sets. Halep was one of the favourites to take the title having reached the French Open final last year. That was only the 2nd time Cornet has won her 1st round match in Madrid.
Vinci reached the 3rd round last year having sorted out her poor start to the 2014 season. She hasn’t been convincing on the clay this year although had a decent win over Puig in the 1st round.
Cornet played well above her usual level and is unlikely to repeat that level today. I’d say we have a good chance of 3 sets.
Lay Cornet below 1.30
ATP Madrid Open, 18:30 – Gulbis v Goffin
Gulbis leads 1-0. That was in 2014 on a hard court in 3 sets.
Just 1 win for Gulbis this year. He had an excellent clay season last year and looks certain to lose a lot of points this week. He reached the quarter finals in 2014.
Goffin hasn’t reached his level of play from last year but is improving. He has no points to defend this week.
How long can Gulbis’ slump continue? He is too good a player to be this bad for much longer but Goffin looks more reliable at the moment. Not 1.41 reliable though. Gulb has made a few fast starts before collapsing. Lets hope Goffin goes an early break behind for a better price.
ATP Madrid Open, 20:30 – Vesely v Cilic
Vesely reached the final in Bucharest. he has been in decent form on the clay.
Cilic had a good week in Monte Carlo with wins over Mayer and Tsonga. He had a disappointing loss to Estrella in Barcelona though. Cilic had an injury which affected him against Djokovic and he was probably still feeling that in the Estrella match. We don’t know the state of that injury.
Vesely should be able to keep this close anyway and its worth laying Cilic below 1.40 .
