The first night shift after having done very little throughout December was a bit of a shock to the system! By 3 ish I was struggling and it wasn’t helping that the liquidity was poor. As there are matches during “normal” hours traders obviously aren’t interested in working all night. I think I am better working a late shift until perhaps 2am is a better idea so I can get some sleep and be up for the morning matches and then Doha and Chennai. I am making an effort this year to limit the hours I work. We’ll see how that goes!
I want to get the blog post done before the trading starts at 11pm so check back later.
WTA ASB Classic, 02:00 – Flipkens v Larsson
Flipkens really should have the upper hand against Larsson on a hard court but it is Larsson who has won both their previous meetings including last October in Luxembourg.
Flipkens didn’t finish the season well with five first round losses in the last 6 events. She did take part in the IPTL but I’m not sure how much that event will help those who took part.
She started 2014 pretty well and reached the semi finals in Auckland.
Larsson didn’t start the season so well and a second round in Auckland was her best week in January. The second half of the season was much better for her.
I think Flipkens can take this one but she will probably trade higher than her 1.86 SP. Three sets wouldn’t surprise me at all.
WTA ASB Classic, 23:00 – Vinci v Vandeweghe
Vinci had a shockingly bad start to her 2014 season. her ranking obviously took a hit but it does mean that if she can have a couple of good weeks in January she can repair a fair amount of the damage.
Vandeweghe also started the year badly and she lost her first match in the first 5 tournaments. Americans usually don’t travel well and prefer to be nearer the mother ship.
I think as long as Vinci is fit she will be more motivated. She will want to improve her ranking back to the top 20 this season and with so few points to defend in the early tournaments she has a great opportunity.
Vinci starts at 2.00 and I will have part stake on her from the start. if Vinci looks generally OK in the early games I will add to the position by laying Vandeweghe below 1.70.
ATP Brisbane, 03:00 – Klizan v Melzer
They have met just once before and it was Melzer who won in 3 sets. That was in 2010 though when he was ranked 28th and Klizan was 200th. Today it is Klizan who is the higher ranked player at 34th and Melzer is 113th.
In the last 12 months Melzer has won just 1 of his 6 main draw hard court matches.
Klizan had problems with his wrist towards the end of last season. He retired from Shenzhen and Valencia and withdrew from Vienna.
Melzer had his own injury issues and missed the start of last season with a shoulder problem. once he got back on tour he had some decent performances and the early half of the season was much stronger than the latter stages of 2014.
Both players could be carrying injuries but really Klizan has had time to rest and get treatment for his wrist and I feel that his SP of 1.75 is a fair one. i expect him to be too strong for Melzer but Melzer usually manages to play at a high standard for short periods of his matches and we should get the chance to get on Klizan above evens.
