ATP Madrid Open, 14:00 – Gasquet v Berdych
Head to heads are 6-6. Berdych won their last 2. Gasquet leads 2-1 on clay including the most recent in 2014 which was in the Davis Cup.
Conditions favour Berdych although Gasquet has a big serve too.
Gasquet won the title last week in Estoril which won’t have helped his recurring back problem. He needs to take the 1st set to have a chance. Berdych to win 2-1 is the most likely outcome.
Wait for a better price on Berdych. Gasquet should go for it from the start.
Berdych starts around 1.55.
WTA Madrid Open, 15:30 – Suarez Navarro v Ivanovic
Ivanovic leads the head to heads 2-0. The most recent was in Rome 2014 on clay and she won in 3 sets.
Suarez Navarro is serving well this week. She has been broken just once in each match.
In the last round Ivanovic played better than she has for a while. She still should have gone 0-3 behind in set 2 to Svitolina but Svitolina couldn’t take any of her game points.
Three sets looks likely. Ivanovic has a little more to play for as she reached the quarter finals last year. If that last win gets her confidence higher she could have a good week.
Back Ivanovic when a break behind.
ATP Madrid Open, 17:00 – Bautista Agut v Querrey
Querrey served well in the first round and won in 3 sets against Kokkinakis. Another example of the conditions giving serve bots more chance than usual on the red clay.
There’s no doubt Bautista Agut is the better clay court player and he has home advantage. He has played pretty consistently since the tour moved onto red clay in Monte Carlo.
The sets will be tight and we’ll see at least 1 tie break. Value at the start is with Querrey and it is worth laying Bautista Agut. This is their first meeting so a tie break in set 1 looks a decent shout.
Bautista Agut should find a way in 2 tight sets or maybe Querrey nicks a tie break set.
