6th October 2014

All the traders’ money this morning has been on the ATP. Monaco got off to a great start which was easy money if you were on!

The prices today are awful for anyone betting pre match. Traders will need to be patient to find the value in play.

WTA Tianjin Open – Cirstea v Linette

Cirstea is now outside the top 100.What a waste of talent. Of course she can play well at any time. It’s her consistency, or lack of it, that has hurt her ranking. She is expected to beat Linette who hasn’t beaten anyone inside the top 250 since June.

Cirstea starts at 1.33 but you’d have to be brave or stupid to back at that price prematch. I will wait to see how the match starts but it will be a new low if Cirstea can’t win this one. A higher price to back her please. Ideally she goes an early break behind.

ATP Shanghai Masters, 11:30 – Chardy v Gasquet

They haven’t played for over 5 years but for the record Gasquet won in Sydney on a hard court in straight sets.

Gasquet was beaten by Nadal last week and the bagel in the second set won’t have helped his confidence.

Chardy fell to eventual winner Nishikori in Tokyo. He had played some decent tennis leading up to that match but was a little disappointing  against the Japanese player.

Gasquet starts at 1.40 which if he was in form would be a decent price. However based on his more recent form and given that Chardy has played some reasonable tennis lately I expect that price to trade a lot higher.

neither had a good run at this tournament last year. Gasquet lost in the first round and Chardy lost in round two to Almagro ( remember him?).

I think Gasquet will win a scrappy match but I will wait for a better price before entering. nothing below 1.65 – 1.70 is worth a back for me. (based on available info pre match)

WTA Linz, 15:00 – Erakovic v Garcia

Erakovic leads the head to heads 3-1 but Garcia won their only 2014 meeting which was in New haven in August. That was on a hard court  and Garcia won 6-4, 6-4.

After New Haven Garcia’s form dipped and she didn’t win a match at the Us Open or in Seoul. A couple of weeks ago in Wuhan we  saw her get some confidence back as she reached the quarter finals beating Radwanska and Venus Williams along the way.  She again met Williams in Beijing last week but was beaten in straight sets.

Erakovic had been making it through qualifying rounds until last week when she was beaten by Barthel in Beijing. A semi final in Washington was a rare successful week for her although she has recent wins over Kuznetsova and Errani.

Garcia starts at 1.70 which has drifted slightly during the morning. This should be a tight match as long as Erakovic can serve well. Three sets look a real possibility but i would have to favour Garcia on recent form.
