WTA Family Circle Cup, 16:30 – Stephens v Mattek Sands
Stephens leads the heads 2-1. Their most recent meeting was a Sands win on clay in 2013. That was in this tournament.
Stephens has never won a main draw match there. Sands hasn’t lost a main draw match there since 2003.
I am not sure how interested Stephens will be in this match though she does need some ranking points. She played well in the last 2 tournaments so you’d think if she was interested she can take the win.
Wait before entering so we can try to figure out if she seems to be trying. Sands hasn’t been overly impressive lately but her last 2 losses were 3 sets. In fact her last 5 matches went to 3.
Stephens starts around 1.40 but I’d prefer to back her when she is a break behind.
ATP US Mens Clay Court Championships, 18:00 – Smyczek v Gabashvili
Smyczek leads the heads to heads 1-0. That was in 2010 on a , hard court and he won in 2 sets.
Gabashvili reached the quarter finals in 2011 but has lost in the qualifying rounds in his last 2 visits. Both times he was favourite. He reached the quarter finals of a Challenger clay event last week.
The courts give Smyczek a little more chance than he would have on European red clay but think Gabashvili scrapes through in 3 sets.
Lay Smyczek if he goes an early break ahead.
WTA Family Circle Cup, 20:30 – Hradecka v Kucova
Kucova leads the head to heads 1-0. That was in 2008 on clay and she won in 3 sets.
The 3 month stats slightly favour Hradecka. She also has a much stronger Win/Loss record for that period.
Hradecka served fairly well to beat Diyas in 3 sets in her first round match.
Kucova’s first serve percentage has been very high and hit 80% in her first round match.
I can see this going to 3 sets. Kucova has an excellent record on clay in the last 12 months but the faster clay in America gives Hradecka more of a chance.
I will be laying Hradecka.
