WTA Brisbane, 01:00 – Kerber v Svitolina
They have played 3 times. Kerber leads 2-1. there most recent meetings were last September when they met twice. Each player won a match each in straight sets.
Kerber has won both her matches in straight sets but struggled more than she should have done in the last round against Gavrilova. She was broken 5 times.
Svitolina saved all 7 of the break points she faced in the first round and Tomljanovic was able to take just 1 of the 4 break chances in their second round encounter.
Kerber starts at 1.51 but I think that will trade higher. If she is to win this one her serve will have to improve so that is what we need to look out for in the early games.
I think it’s worth laying her below 1.35 as Svitolina is likely to put her under pressure.
If Kerber serves well, she wins.
WTA ASB Classic, 05:30 – Vesnina v V Williams
Venus wasn’t tested in her first round match with Cepelova. In round 2 Nara was able to break her twice in the early part of the match but once Venus settled she took control.
Vesnina has played better than I expected so far. I had thought that Mladenovic would cause her some problems in the first round but she won in straight sets and was broken just 3 times. In the second round she saved all 3 of the break points that Konjuh had.
Vesnina leads the head to heads 2-1 over Venus but it was the American who won their most recent meeting. That was in February last year on a hard court in Dubai and she won in straight sets.
This could turn into an excellent match. What would make it interesting is if Venus has a shaky start from the service line as she did in the previous round. I expect Venus to take the match. She starts at 1.29 which is just too low.
Either lay her from the start and switch the green to her at a higher price or alternatively wait for a higher entry price. 1.60 minimum.
