8th April 2015

The Shark Tips results have been very much “1 step forward and 1 step back” this season. There have been a high number of near misses.  April has started well though with 11 of the 15 selections being winners.

WTA Katowice, 15:00 – Giorgi v Linette

Giorgi served below her average level in her last match. Linette served well above her average.

Giorgi reached the final last year. Her losses this year have all been close. She has a lot more to play for this week than her opponent but if Linette can keep serving well she can make a real match of this.

I certainly expect Giorgi to trade higher and she is worth a lay at the start.

Linette’s’s serve could come under attack from Giorgi’s big ground strokes but they will be erratic at times. We could see a few price swings in this one.

Giorgi to win in 2 tight sets or maybe 3.

WTA Family Circle Cup, 20:00 – Stephens v Barthel

Stephens leads the head to heads  1-0. That was in 2013 on a hard court and went to 3 sets.

The 3 month stats slightly favour Stephens. She served well in her first round match and was broken just 4 times in 3 sets. She has won 8 of her last 10 matches.

Barthel also served well. Babos’ second serve was very poor which gave Barthel her chances. Barthel faced just 1 break point which was taken. There has been a real lack of consistency from Barthel this season.

Stephens has shown she is interested in this tournament coming back from a set down in the last match. I expect her to take this but she will need to serve well again. Barthel can take a set.

Wait for a higher price on Stephens. If she takes an early break lay her. She was a break ahead in the 1st set yesterday and lost the set.

ATP – US Mens Clay, 21:00 – Johnson v Querrey

Querrey leads the head to heads  2-0. Both matches were in 2014 on hard courts and were won in 2 sets.

The 3 month stats favour Johnson in everything except service holds. He faced 5 break points in the last round and saved 4 of them. Young served below his normal level.

Querrey didn’t have to play a full set in round 1 when Matosevic retired. He reached the semi finals last year.

This looks a very even match up and is tough to call. Value is on Johnson as underdog. His recent results are better than Querrey’s.

Should be a good match to back servers. Slight edge to Johnson.
