8th August 2014

What a day yesterday! Djokovic, Wawrinka and Berdych all went out. In the women’s tournament Sharapova, Kvitova and Jankovic all went home. Favourites weren’t having an easy day with several needing 3 sets including Federer, Ferrer and Raonic.

Let’s see what today brings 🙂

WTA Rogers Cup, 17:00 – Serena Williams v Wozniacki.

Serena Williams looked like she was going to have an easy match against Safarova when she immediately broke serve but Safarova didn’t give up and broke straight back.Williams won in two tight sets.

Wozniacki had no trouble at all with Shelby Rogers losing just 1 game.

Williams leads the head to heads 6-1. They have played twice on hard courts in the last 3 seasons and won a match each.

We don’t often get 1.32 on Williams pre match which reflects her recent unpredictability. Wozniacki isn’t without a chance in this one. When Wozniacki was ranked number one Williams was very vocal about the fact that she didn’t think you should be number one if you have never won s grand slam. You get the feeling when these two meet that Williams has a little extra motivation to prove a point.

Wozniacki has been serving well and i expect to see a higher price to back Williams. I will wait for an early break of serve.

ATP Rogers Cup, 18:00 – Tsonga v Murray

Murray leads the head to heads 9-3. Tsonga’s only win since 2008 was last December in an exhibition event. I don’t too much weight to results in exhibitions.

Tsonga played some excellent tennis yesterday to beat Djokovic in straight sets. It’s fair to say that Djokovic was pretty poor by his own very high standards but the win will have given the Frenchman a great deal of confidence.

Murray was expected to be rusty in his first match after Wimbledon but Kyrgios was completely overwhelmed by the occasion and offered no resistance. At least that was a nice gentle warm up for Murray.

Murray starts at 1.46 but I think Tsonga has a chance to at least take a set so I will look for a lay below 1.30 in the early games.

I expect Murray to force Tsonga to play a lot of balls today and eventually that is going to bring about errors from the Tsonga racquet. If Tsonga gets an early lead I will be switching the green to Murray.

WTA Rogers Cup, 23:00 – Vandeweghe v Makarova

Vandeweghe has already played 5 matches as she came through the qualifying rounds. Her last 2 wins were over top 10 opposition.

Makarova also took a top 10 scalp in the last round when she beat Kvitova. She starts at 1.49 which is probably about right given Vandeweghe has played a lot of tennis over the last few days.and both her last 2 matches went the distance.

Vandeweghe has been serving well over all but her ground strokes have been erratic under pressure. There is a chance that we will see a higher price on Makarova and I will wait a few games to see if this looks like becoming reality.

Makarova should take this one fairly comfortably.
