The prices tonight are nothing special to say the least. It looks like being a night for patience.
ATP Brisbane, 01:00 – Groth v Raonic
Groth has made a pretty good start to the season beating Hewitt in the first round and knocked out Kubot in 3 sets. Two of those 3 sets were tie breaks.
Raonic has played just 1 match as he had a bye through the first round. His second round was a regulation win over Kukushkin in which he hit 17 aces and didn’t face a single break point.
These two have met just once which was in 2013 on a hard court in Washington. Raonic won in straight sets. Raonic didn’t face any break points that day either. He had 9 break chances on the Groth serve but the Aussie saved 7 of them.
Raonic starts at 1.20 which is understandable but in matches between two big servers you need a decent entry price. Groth’s best chance is tie breaks. It could be worth laying Raonic despite the fact that he will have more chances to break than his opponent. The potential upside is greater than the risk. Exit if Raonic breaks.
WTA ASB Classic, 04:00 – Wozniacki v Zahlavova Strycova
Defending champion Wozniacki hasn’t dropped a set yet although Townsend pushed her to a tie break in the second set. She dealt well with Goerges in the quarter finals. Goerges had played well this week.
Zahlavova Strycova needed 3 sets in her first 2 matches. In both she took the opening set before losing concentration in the second. She lost her cool against Erakovic but she is one of those players who is no stranger to arguments with umpires and it doesn’t tend to affect her game for long. In the quarter final she again took the opening set and let her opponent back into the match in set 2. Vandeweghe was 5-1 up but just couldn’t hold onto her serve. Zahlavova Strycova won in straight sets.
Zahlavova Strycova won their last meeting which was at Wimbledon last season but Wozniacki leads the head to heads 3-1.
Wozniacki starts at 1.26 and I think Zahlavova Strycova could push her price higher. This should be a good match and could easily go to 3 sets. I have to go with Wozniacki to reach the final again. If she gets an early break I will be laying her.
WTA Brisbane, 10:30 – Sharapova v Svitolina
Sharapova reached the final last season. She lost to Serena and must fancy her chances of going one step further as Williams chose to play the Hopman Cup this week.
She hasn’t been tested so far this week although her serve looked shaky in the early games against Suarez Navarro.
Svitolina also controlled her first two matches but looked like she was going to fall to Kerber. She came back from a set behind. Kerber gave her quite a bit of help but Svitolina never gave up.
They have played just once which was last September. Sharapova won easily.
In her last match Sharapova had 5 double faults which is more than Svitolina had in her 3 matches combined. Another shaky performance from the service line could give Svitolina some opportunities. Whether Svitolina is able to take advantage remains to be seen.
Sharapova starts the match at 1.20 and has to be worth a lay. i don’t think Svitolina will be able to win but I will be disappointed if she isn’t able to give Sharapova a real scare.
