ATP French Open 4th round: Goffin v Gulbis

Head to heads are 1-1. Their last meeting was in May 2015. Goffin won in 3 sets on clay. Both their matches went to a deciding set.

Goffin had a tough match with Almagro in the third round. Almagro has been playing like the top 10 player he used to be. He had beaten Kohlschreiber fairly comfortably earlier in the week. Goffin needed 5 sets to put Almagro away. We have seen 5 setters affect even the top players. Even Murray was tired after his 5 setter with Stepanek. Simon had never dropped a set to Troicki but lost in 3 after going to a deciding set in the previous round. Nishikori had gone to 5 sets with Verdasco and lost to Gasquet having beaten him in straight sets twice this year.

Gulbis has been playing well in this tournament but was 2-5 down to Tsonga before the Frenchman retired. Goffin is tough to beat when in form and I give him the edge today. He won’t win in 3 sets and may start slowly. Back Goffin if he gets broken first.
