This will be their first meeting.
Gonzalez has played just 1 match since the end of May. That was in the first qualification round at Wimbledon which he lost in straight sets as slight underdog. He is a very capable clay player but all his successes come on the Challenger tour. He usually starts matches well as underdog but Chardy is a level above his usual Challenger opponents.
Chardy had a little success on clay in May reaching the third round in Rome, losing to Murray, and the third round at the French Open where he went down to Wawrinka. He hasn’t had a good time on the grass courts with just a win over an injured Monfils to show for his efforts. He lost to Fognini in 3 sets in the first round in Hamburg last year.
Hopefully Gonzalez can make a fast start in this one and we can back Chardy when he is a break behind.
Chardy starts around 1.30 .
