ATP – Monday

The early WTA games seem to have been affected with rain delays and there are still qualifiers to be played in Metz and Bucharest so not a  huge number of games today.

The Champions League T20 cricket should be interesting though 😉

Gil v Chardy – (clay)

Chardy leads the head to heads 3-0 including 1 match on clay in 2008.

Gil reached the semi finals of the Challenger in Genova a couple of weeks ago which was also on clay. The standard of opposition wasn’t spectacular to say the least.

Chardy hasn’t played since the beginning of August so should be eager to get back on court. He may be a little rusty but I’d expect him to get back into the swing quickly.

Gil is happier on clay but Chardy has more talent over all. Gil starts as favourite at 1.86 but I am going with Chardy. The head to heads suggest he likes Gil’s style of play and even though he hasn’t played much recently I think he will have too much for the player from Portugal. (1.86/2.14)

Update: Chardy took the first set but in a tight match the next 2 sets saw the players seperated by 1 break.

Gil won 2-6, 6-4, 6-3.

Muller v Petzschner – (hardcourt)

Petzschner leads the head to heads 2-0 but they haven’t played since 2007. Muller has improved his ranking

dramatically this year and is now higher the higher ranked player. He has had some tight sets with Nadal at Wimbledon with the first 2 sets being tie breaks.

Petzschner has a great game for hard courts but if Muller can also serve well he has a chance.  He isn’t the best returner of a ball though and if Petzscner has one of his inspired days then he could steam roller Muller.

However I don’t see huge motivation for Petzschner here and I will go for Muller to win in 3. We are likely to see at least 1 tie break. (2.16)

Update: That was about as tight as a straight sets win can be.

Muller won 7-6, 7-6.
