ATP Wimbledon, 2nd round: Del Potro v Wawrinka

Del Potro leads their previous meetings 3-2.  he won their last 3 with their last match being in Estoril in April 2012. That was on clay and he won in straight sets. They have only met once on grass which was at Wimbledon 2008 and Wawrinka won in 3 sets.

Wawrinka needed 4 sets to beat Fritz in the 1st round. Losing the 3rd set is not unusual as the player who is 2-0 up tries to conserve energy for the next round.  Stan was only broken once in that match from 3 break chances.

Del Potro was just too strong for Robert in their first round encounter.  He was broken just once and won the 3rd set 6-0.

Del Potro has the stronger pedigree on grass although obviously he has been out for a while. His forehand is bound to play a big part in this match as the power he can generate is immense.  Wawrinka will win the back hand battle with Del Potro favouring a slice more than a drive these days to protect his weak wrist.

I am looking forward to this one as I think Del Potro has a genuine chance. Value is certainly on him. I’ll look to lay Wawrinka below 1.30 in the early games. He starts the match around 1.50
