08:30 – Djokovic v Murray
Well the women’s final was far from being a classic. Let’s hope this one is more memorable.
Djokovic leads the head to heads 13-8. They were scheduled to meet in the final of the Abu Dhabi Exhibition at the start of the year but Djokovic withdrew before the match.
Since the Australian Open semi final in 2012 they have met 13 times and Djokovic has won 9 of them. He won all 4 of their 2014 meetings with Murray taking just 1 set.
Last season obviously wasn’t the best on record for Murray as he recovered from back surgery. He finished the season well though and has really found his old form in this tournament.
Berdych had beaten a below par Nadal in the quarter finals but Murray made him look very ordinary in his 4 sets victory.
Djokovic took out defending champion Wawrinka. He looked to be in control at 2-1 up and 2-0 in the 4th set but Wawrinka found inspiration from somewhere. He got the break back straight away and went on to level at 2 sets each but he had given all he had to give and Djokovic cruised through the 5th set to win it 6-0.
As I write this on Saturday afternoon Djokovic is a 1.49 favourite. based on both players’ form in their semi finals that looks a little low.
Murray’s ability to go toe to toe with Djokovic in a slam final is hard to judge as his 2014 form doesn’t give a true indication of his chances.
Djokovic has never lost in the final. Murray has yet to win one after 3 attempts.
Djokovic didn’t play near his best in the semi final but is more than capable of lifting his game. However Murray has looked very sharp. He is playing aggressive tennis and is also serving very well. I think he will take the title this time
