Australian Open 2015 – week 1, day 2

There were some unexpected casualties last night. Ivanovic, Kerber Lisicki, Suarez Navarro and Safarova will all have been hoping to reach the second week but didn’t even make the second day.

The men didn’t fair so badly with Gulbis and Monaco the biggest names to go out.

Lets see what tonight brings!

WTA, midnight – Stephens v Azarenka

Their two previous meetings were both at the Australian Open. In fact this will be the third consecutive year that they will play in Melbourne. Azarenka won the last two easily.

Azarenka won the title in 2012 and 2013 but lost out to Radwanska at the quarter final stage last season. Since she returned to the tour after injury she has struggled to regain her old form.

Stephens has lost in the second round in both tournaments this season. She lost as a strong market favourite each time.

Azarenka starts at 1.50 . She has played just 1 match in 2015 which she lost to Pliskova in 3 sets. She would hate to go out in the first round of a tournament that she has enjoyed a great deal of success at. She can sometimes have problems from the service line and we may see a higher price on her. I will place a reduced stake on her from the start and will add to the position if she goes above 1.75 .

Nothing is certain as we saw yesterday but I am going with Azarenka to get the win.

WTA, 01:15 – Cibulkova v Flipkens

Cibulkova leads the head to heads 3-2. She won their only recent meeting which was last September on a hard court. She won easily in straight sets.

Both players have a losing record over the past 6 months on hard courts.

Cibulkova has lost 2 of her 3 matches in 2015. Flipkens has the same success rate but at least she took them all to 3 sets.

Cibulkova starts at 1.40 but she usually trades well above SP in the early part of the match. We have the choice of laying her or waiting for a better entry price.  Personally I’ll be waiting for her to go a break behind but may add part stake on her if she hits 1.70 .

WTA, 02:45 – Bacsinszky v Jankovic

Bacsinszky reached the final in Shenzhen. She beat Kvitova in the semi final before losing to Halep. She is enjoying a return to form that started last season and it looks like it will continue this year.

Jankovic reached the 4th round of the US Open but since then she hasn’t managed to win back to back matches. She has played just 1 match this year which ended in defeat to Tomljanovic. She was bageled in the second set.

Bacsinszky starts as favourite at 1.80 which is a shame as I was hoping Jankovic would be the market favourite. Jankovic could find her form at any time but tonight I will be backing Bacsinszky. I expect Jankovic to make a decent start to the match and she will trade below evens. If Jankovic goes an early break ahead I will lay her.

ATP, 04:00 – Querrey v Istomin

No detailed write up for this one. This will be a serve dominated match and I expect Istomin to win in 4 sets. The starting prices are ideal for backing a few service games.
