Australian Open 2015 – week 1, day 6

Seppi beat Federer in 4 sets! Seppi has been able to get himself into winning positions against the top players before but usually can’t quite get over the finishing line. A superb win for the Italian. Hopefully he can build on that and put together a great season.

WTA, midnight – Giorgi v Venus Williams

This is the first meeting between the players.

Giorgi beat Pennetta in 3 sets in round 1. having hit 16 double faults in that match she improved her consistency in the next round. She beat Smitkova in straight sets and hit just 5 doubles.

Venus won the title in Auckland to start off her season. She has won both her matches this week in straight sets. She struggled with her first serve in the last round getting  just 48% of them in.

This is the type of opponent that Giorgi seems to be able to fire herself up for. Both players can be vulnerable from the service line and there’s a good chance we get a few breaks of serve in this one.

It should be an entertaining match and I am going with Venus to get the win. She starts at 1.45 but we should get a much higher price early in the match. However if Venus gets the early break I will be laying her.

WTA, midnight – Muguruza v Bacsinszky

This is on at the same time as the Venus match but take your pick which one you trade.

They have never met before. Muguruza ended both her match against Erakovic and Hantuchova with bagels. She had also bageled Kerber last week in Sydney but the German came back to win in 3 sets.

Bacsinszky beat Jankovic in the first round but struggled in the opening set of her second round clash with Tatishvili. She almost saved the set and took it to a tie break but couldn’t close out a tight breaker.

Muguruza starts around 1.60 for this one and that seems like a bit of value. That of course doesn’t mean she won’t trade higher.

ATP, 01:15 – Lopez v Janowicz

How lucky was Lopez in the last round? I had managed to block it from my memory until I wrote that last line. Bollox.

These two have never met before either. Where’s everyone BEEN???

Janowicz starts at 1.71 and whilst I would prefer a price nearer evens I think he takes this one. He beat Monfils in 5 sets in the last round. playing a 5 setter can affect a player in the next round but having seen Lopez’ form before the Mannarino injury I can’t back him tonight.

Janowicz’ second serve wasn’t great but luckily for him Monfils’ was even worse. the rest of his game was solid.

WTA, 09:30 – Kvitova v Keys

At least these two have played before. They met in 2013 in Tokyo and Kvitova won easily.

Keys had a nightmare opening set against Dellacqua. She looked completely clueless. Whatever the issue was she sorted it out in time for the second and third sets and won them in impressive fashion.

Kvitova has had a pretty comfortable week so far and didn’t drop a set in her match with Hogenkamp and Barthel.

Keys doesn’t have a great record against top 10 players although she beat Cibulkova earlier this month and Kerber and Jankovic last season.

Kvitova starts at 1.27 but if Keys can avoid another slow start we should get a much better price to back Kvitova. I’ll take 1.60 .
