Australian Open – week 1, Wednesday

It’s been quite an uneventful tournament so far. Other than Kvitova losing in the first round there haven’t really been any shock results.

The main thing making the news are the temperatures. Very few of the players are used to having to perform under those conditions. Temperatures peaked at 42.2 degrees C.

Dancevic and a ball boy collapsed on court and China’s Peng threw up.I’m sure we’ll have even more retirements in the next few days.

At least now the first round is over the workload for traders is approaching normal levels.

Barthel takes on Kumkhum who knocked out Kvitova in the last round.  Barthel has a great power game but something in her head prevents her from producing her best tennis consistently. She didn’t play too badly in the last round and if she can play at the same level she has a great chance of making the third round.

Kvitova pretty much beat herself in that first round loss and although Kumkhum played her part she probably can’t believe she isn’t on her way home.

Predicted holds are much higher for Barthel  and this one is hers to win or lose. I won’t be backing her below evens. She starts at around 1.70 .

Update: Barthel won 4-6, 6-3, 6-4.

if you were compiling a list of players who either wouldn’t cope with the heat or really couldn’t be bothered to exert themselves I think most people would have Dolgopolov on their list.

He takes on Chardy who has been playing and serving well over the last few months. Chardy has beaten him in 2 of their 3 hard court matches and will push him very close tonight.

Some of the pre-match value has been lost on Chardy but I will be looking to enter in play. A lay of Dolgopolov if he goes a break ahead seems a decent way to go. When Chardy breaks back remove some or all of your liability and let it run for a while. I am favouring Chardy for the win.

Update: Chardy won 7-5, 7-6, 6-7, 7-6

Garcia-Lopez has won all 3 of his previous matches against Roger-Vasselin. Two of those matches were on clay and the other on grass. Hard courts level things up for Vasselin and the Frenchman has the edge in the stats over the last 3 months.

Garcia Lopez starts at 1.76 and I will wait to lay him below 1.40 .It’s hard to pick a final winner so if I get a decent price move in Vasselin’s favour I will take the profit and move on.

Update: Roger Vasselin won 7-6, 6-4, 4-6, 6-1.

Keys has won her last 2 matches against Zheng. I expect her to get a third win today but her starting price of 1.40 is way too low. I will be monitoring the score of this match along with others and if Keys goes a break behind I will be backing her.

It won’t be an easy win. Zheng beat Vinci in straight sets in her first match. keys is a competely different player to Vinci and she should have the power to take control as long as she paces herself in the heat.

Update: Zheng won 7-6, 1-6, 7-5..

Goerges had one of those days against Errani where her shots found the target. She hasn’t  had two main draw wins back to back since April and I am favouring Davis to send her packing tonight.

Davis has better numbers in all categories except service holds in the last 3 month so if Goerges has a bad day from the service line she has little else in her armoury to get her out of trouble.

Update:Davis won 7-5, 2-6, 6-4.
