12:00 – De Bakker v Cuevas
Rankings are 47 and 70. They haven’t played before.
Cuevas is mainly a clay court player and has been doing well on the clay courts on the Challenger tour. He reached the semi finals in the Shanghai Masters a couple of weeks ago and will look to continue the success on hard courts.
De Bakker’s level has dropped off a little although he did beat Verdasco in straight sets in Shanghai. He will start as favourite today as he is more comfortable on hard courts.
Looking at stats for the last month they hold serve 90% and 81%. De Bakker has saved an amazing 77% of break points against him. However he converted just 25% of his own break point chances.
De Bakker has better stats against serve.( despite the above stat).
This could be a very tight match. De Bakker, on paper, should win but with his form in Shanghai Cuevas must fancy his chances.
De Bakker will need his own serve to be working well but he will also need to return serve effectively to create break chances. Cuevas won’t be rolling over and making his job easy.
De Bakker can sometimes wobble in his opening service games so its best to let them have a service game each before getting involved. Backing De Bakker on serve should work well as will scalping.
Update: Cuevas won 7-6, 1-6, 6-4.
