12:30 – Ferrer v Verdasco
Rankings are 17 and 9. Head to heads are 5-3 to Verdasco. He has won the last 2 matches ( both on clay) but the most recent was 6 years ago.
Ferrer is perhaps second only to Nadal on clay and has an 18/2 win/loss record this year on this surface. Verdasco is 9/2.
Verdasco often doesn’t play well for an entire match especially against the top players. When he does play well he is exceptional. I can see a great match today that could go either way but Ferrer would be my pick.
Both players can be backed on serve but I’d recommend waiting for the first 2 or 3 games incase one of them gets off to a slow start.
Update: Ferrer won a tight first set and had an early break in the second. Verdasco came back to take the second set.
Ferrer fell apart a little in the deciding set and Verdasco was able to take control and also the match.
Verdasco won 6-7, 7-5, 6-1
14:30 – De Bakker v Soderling
Rankings are 67 and 8. Thay haven’t played before.
De Bakker has had a great tournament beating both Tsonga and Ferrero in 3 sets. Those matches will have taken their toll and he isn’t used to still being in contention on a Saturday.
Soderling is playing very well and hasn’t lost a set this week. His price is very low on Betfair but is probably about right.
Back Soderling from the start and green up at the end of the first set.
Update: Easy win for Soderling 6-1, 6-4.
