Barcelona Open – Wednesday

13:30 – Anderson v Hanescu

Rankings are 35 and 66. Head to heads are 1-0 to Hanescu which was in January this year on a hard court and went to 3 sets.

Anderson’s serve was superb in his win over Cuevas. It wiped out any advantage that Cuevas could gain from being an experienced claycouter. In Monte Carlo he took the first set from another claycourter, Fognini, but couldn’t keep the intensity level high enough to win that match.

Hanescu is certainly recognised as being more comfortable on clay. He had a very solid win over Golubev in the last round. He also reached the semi finals of the Grand Prix Hassan II event. He struggles to keep up a high level of play for an entire match and plays a lot of 3 setters.

This should be a very close match and I doubt that the first break will be the last. Hanescu starts off at 1.80 on Betfair. You could lay him from the start as I expect Anderson to win the match but I will be looking for a much lower price to get the lay in.

Anderson to win in 3.

Update: Surprised to see Hanescu win 6-4, 6-4.

Gasquet looks a little short at 1.20 although I would expect him to win the match eventually. Kavcic may be able to trouble him early in the match but would probably bottle it if he had a chance to actually win.

Update: Gasquet was broken in his first service game and was 2-0 down. he came back to take the set. Kavcic took the second and Gasquet easily won the decider. Gasquet having a dip in form but stillcomes through 6-3, 4-6, 6-2.

Is Davydenko a 1.20 shot at the moment? Not for me. A lot of todays favourites at Barcelona are a little too low to be backed from the start so todays tactic for me will be to watch for opportunities to get backs in at higher prices.  I think the markets have the right players as favourites but as we saw yesterday on clay most players are capable of a slow start. Wheter you decide to lay from the start or wait for better prices is up to you.

There looks like being some great opportunities in the WTA matches.

Zvonareva has had a few very slow starts recently and Pavlyuchenkova is capable of taking advantage.

Update: Another slow start gave pav the opening set but Zvonareva fought back to win 3-6, 6-4, 6-2.

Barrois is playing infront of a home crowd against Bartoli. She played well in the last match to knock out Safarova so will be confident going into this one. It really depends which Bartoli shows up for the first set.

Update: Bartoli was poor from start to finish, oh no actually she held serve well in the first game. Barrois won 6-4, 6-2.

Schiavone is currently at 2.48 against Radwanska. She has proved that she can excel on clay and has to be in with a chance.

Update: the prices proved to be spot on! Radwanska won 6-1, 6-3.

Petkovic v Jankovic– These two played recently on a hard court and it went to 3 sets. Both have reached semi finals in the last few weeks so it should be a match with plenty of price swings.

Update: Jankovic was much the stronger player in the first set but then played one of the worst sets i have seen. In the third set petkovic was well on top although JJ fough back a little.

Petkovic won 3-6, 6-1, 6-3.
