Bell Challenge 2012 – Friday

Barthel looks low at 1.24 against Zahlavova Strycova as despite the fact that she won both their previous meetings in straight sets she is capable of a slow start as we saw in the last round. After that slow start though she looked quite impressive and i would expect her to take her place in the semi final. Either lay her at the start or perhaps the better option is to wait for a higher price of 1.40 to 1.50 before backing.

Flipkens starts as underdog against Tatishvili. Both have a decent serve but Tatishvili is slightly better on return. I expect another slow start from Flipkens and I have Tatishvili as favourite to take the first set. She doesn’t have many 3 setter but if Flipkens can lift her level in the second set I think we will see this one go the distance. If it does go to 3 sets I give a slight edge to Flipkens. Tatishvili needs to get the job done in 2.

Oudin had a walkover into the quarter finals as Wozniack picked up an injury and was forced to withdraw. Her opponent tonight is Mladenovic who started poorly against Beck in the last round but sorted her game out to win in a tight 3 set match.

Mladenovic starts as slight favourite at 1.75 and I feel thats a decent price on her.  Oudin needs to hope that Mladenovic starts slowly again but even that may not be enough for her to get her nose in front. It just wouldn’t feel right for Oudin to be in the semi final.

Finally Hradecka takes on Lauren Davis who destroyed a poor Wickmayer in the second round 6-1, 6-1.

Davis has come through qualifying and yet starts as favourite against 8th seed Hradecka. On balance I’d say thats about right. Hradecka can challenge almost any player when her serve is firing on all cylinders. We saw glimpses of it yesterday and she served very well in the previous round but unless she has that weapon working for the whole match she will be in trouble.

Davis has a decent serve herself and perhaps she strives to serve like John Isner. She certainly starts her service routine by passing the ball through her legs a couple of times before the ball toss which is something Isner has a habit of doing. However John doesn’t feel the need to lift his leg to allow the ball to pass under it! Lauren is only little 🙂

This should be a very tight match but I am favouring Davis. Hradecka will get some cheap points from her serve but it wasn’t consistent enough last night for me to back her today.
