We were backing players on serve last night! Never feels right. They were serving like men.
They will only get harder to predict as we near the final stages….
Erakovic v Falconi:
Erakovic reached the quarter finals in the Bank of the West Classic where she lost to Cinulkova. Since then she has beaten an out of form/injured Vesnina and lost to Razzano and Lucic. She needed 3 sets to get past Garcia in the first round.
Falconi reached the third round of the US Open beating Cibulkova along the way but was battered by Lisicki. She beat Riske in the first round in straight sets.
None of the above is very inspiring and as we are missing all the top players this week we are faced with finding winners from players who don’t win many matches!
They are pretty even on betfair with Falconi a slight favourite at 1.93 . I see Falconi being slightly more consistent as she uses more spin that flat hitting. Erakovis will try to hit through her but I am going for Falconi in 2 tight sets on perhaps 3.
Update: Well that was garbage! Neither player deserved to win the first set but it went to Erakovic. In the second Falconi improved her consistency a little and I thought she would take the match. She levelled at 1 set all but then pretty much caved in during the third.
Erakovic won 6-3, 4-6, 6-2.
Zahlavova Strycova v Lucic:
ZS won their only previous match which was on a hard court at the Oz Open in January. She won in straight sets. She has also won her last 11 matches on carpet though not all of them were on the main WTA tour.
Lucic has played some half decent tennis recently but not had much to show for it.
I think this will be a match with plenty breaks of serve as both can be dire at times on their own serve. Not much to separate them so I am going with Zahlavova Strycoka’s love of the carpet.
ZS to win in 3 sets.
Update: I don’t know what ZS was doing in the first set. She broke in the first game and it was all down hill from there. She lost the set and then decided to play some tennis. She took a 4-0 lead and served out the set. In the third Lucic broke serve but ZS broke straight back. After that she never really looked like losing.
Zahlavova Strycova won 2-6, 6-1, 6-3.
