Chennai Open Semi Finals

11:30 – Malisse v Tipsarevic

Rankings are 60 and 49. Head to heads are 1-0 to Tipsarevic.

Both men started their quarter finals slowly. Malisse got an early break but then struggled for what seemed like an age to hold serve. Once he got going it was an easy win.

Tipsarevic didn’t seem focussed against Nishikori in the early games but  got the job done easily enough in the end.

If Tipsarevic can get himself motivated right from the start then he is a strong favourite.

Malisse will need to serve more consistently than he did in the early part of the quarter final if he is to stay in touch with the Serb.

1.70 is a great price for Tipsarevic who lifts his game for the bigger matches. Malisse isn’t used to still being in contention at the weekend.

See how they start the match but if Tipsarevic starts as I expect him to he is ok to back on serve. Alternatively back him from the start.

I expect him to have too much class for Malisse.

Update: Malisse won 3-6, 6-3, 6-2.

13:30 – Berdych v Wawrinka

Rankings are 6 and 21. Head to heads are 4-3 to Berdych. Two of Wawrinka’s wins were on clay.

Berdych has been rock solid this week and hasn’t dropped a set.

Wawrinka let the rain delay get to him and when they returned he was immediately broken to 0. He looked like he just wasn’t interested and Haase took the set. As the second set wore on he improved and took the second and third sets 6-3.

Wawrinka was also less than inspiring in his second round match against new boy Goffin, only taking the match 7-6, 7-6.

Berdych has seemed very focussed in recent weeks and I can see him having a good season. Sulky Stan needs to get himself up for this match or it could be over quite quickly.

Back Berdych on serve.

Update: surprisingly Wawrinka won 6-4, 6-1.
