9:30 – Ferrer v Soderling
Rankings are 11 and 5. Head to heads are 7-2 to Soderling.
Soderling likes to lose the first set and then come back to win. He has managed it in one of his matches this week and we could well see the same again. Of the 10 matches they have played only 3 have been in straight sets.
Ferrer is in a great run of form and reached the semi finals of the Malaysian Open. He came through a tricky match against Lu in the last round but it took him 3 sets.
They hold serve 82% and 86%. Ferrer is much better on return of serve.
I’d expect Soderling to take the match but Ferrer won’t make it easy. Like most clay court specialists he can run all day and just keeps getting the ball back in play. Soderling can sometimes get frustrated by this type of player and starts to go for the big winners before the opportunity is really there.
However he is also in decent form and dealt with Almagro well enough in his last match.
Both can be backed on serve. We will probably see three sets.
Update: Soderling lost the first set as expected but wasn’t able to come back this time.
Ferrer won 6-2, 6-4.
